• William J. Connell founds W.J. Connell Co as a bicycle repair shop in downtown Boston. Mr. Connell was a prolific entrepreneur who founded several businesses and developed real estate during the first half of the 20th century. His son, William J. Connell, Jr., joined his father in the early 1930s, which began a very successful father-son partnership for over 25 years.
  • By the 1940s, W.J. Connell Co. has become a full-service distributor to the automotive industry. In 1951, the company acquired the William H. Flaherty Company to obtain the Electric Autolite line. With this acquisition, W.J. Connell Co. also picked up a small outdoor power equipment line, Briggs & Stratton.
  • In 1970, William J. Connell, Jr. and company president, George E. Stephenson, make the strategic decision to sell their larger automotive company and focus on the rapidly growing outdoor power distribution business, which was led by the Briggs & Stratton line. This began a 20-year period of significant growth for the company.
  • W.J. Connell Co. expands its distribution territory into New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania in 1976. Adding this territory doubled the size of the Company.
  • George E. Stephenson founds Atlantic Power, Inc. in 1986 to put singular focus on representing Briggs & Stratton. Mr. Stephenson constructed a new 50,000 square-foot distribution headquarters for Atlantic Power in Foxboro, MA, and assembled a team focused on growing the Briggs & Stratton line.
  • Atlantic Power acquires Power Equipment Co., a Briggs & Stratton Central Distributor covering Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Atlantic Power consolidates distribution facilities in Foxboro, MA and Somerset, NJ to a new 105,000 square foot headquarters in Albany, NY. This location allows Atlantic Power to process over 1,500 orders daily and deliver shipments on a "next day" basis to 95% of its territory.
  • Atlantic Power expands its west coast territory by acquiring Pacific Power Co., the Briggs & Stratton Central distributor for northern California and western Nevada.
  • Briggs & Stratton consolidates its North American distribution network to six ownership groups. Atlantic Power and the remaining groups found the Integrated Distributors Network (IDN), a unique organization dedicated to providing seamless marketing and service solutions to its customers throughout the United States and Canada.
  • Atlantic Power merges with with Central Power Systems, the Briggs & Stratton Central Distributor for the Midwest and Florida. The combination brings together the best practices of each organization to deliver the optimal sales, service and operational solutions to customers across a network footprint that spans 16 states from Michigan to Maine.
